Is Chiropractic Care Right for my Kids?

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

Short answer is, most of the time...YES!

Chiropractic care is safe for your littles, and can be an important part of their lives as they grow.

Chiropractors that provide pediatric care will do wellness checks on children, similar to a pediatrician, but with a focus on the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and nerves. Milestones are good times to bring little ones in. Some examples of these milestones include:

Birth

Sitting Up

Crawling

Walking

Running

Sports

I suggest having a checkup within the first few months of birth, then about monthly or around important milestones. However, there are some times when coming in to a chiropractor sooner would be a good idea.

If you notice trouble with nursing, persistent head tilt, unconventional crawling, possible scoliosis (spine curvature), sporting injuries, falls, or headaches it might be worth a visit. Also some pediatricians will recommend a visit when they see a problem that a chiropractor is better suited to treat.

Let's go over certain time frames and what your child could need a chiropractic exam for!

Newborns: It's a good idea to have a newborn looked at for any cranial or spinal issues. Look for things like neck rotation, facial asymmetry, falls and injuries.

3-12 Months: Regular wellness check-ups are great, especially when rolling over, sitting up, pulling up, cruising, crawling, and walking which all happen within this time frame. Any concerns with these milestones like late occurrence or abnormal patterns can be assessed.

1-4 Years: This age group should be looked at again every couple of months for wellness checks. If you notice a delay in walking, or a pattern change like toe-walking or toe-in walking it is a good idea to bring your child in.

4-11 Years: Children going through elementary school should be watched for back and neck pain, headaches, posture (scoliosis), growing pains and if they are involved in sports. Backpacks can cause discomfort as well.

12-18 Years: As we get into the teenage years, sporting activities become a big reason for chiropractic visits. Postural disorders are also a concerns given the prevalence of video games and intense school work in this group. Young girls suffering from menstruation cramps can also benefit from a chiropractor.

So there you have it! Chiropractic care can be a great addition to the overall health and wellness of your child. And don't worry, it is all gentle!
